For the Docklands Chaplaincy to build on the foundation laid by the present Chaplain and achieve growth, it needs to be paid for. The intention from the outset was always after the first three years the incumbent chaplain and the Steering Group would raise the funds to ensure the long term future of the office.
The Docklands Chaplaincy services the whole of Canary Wharf Estate, including both large office buildings and retail malls. Funds are being raised to continue the work of the role of Bishop’s Chaplain in Docklands for a further three years from June 2007. Canary Wharf Group plc and the Anglican Diocese of London initially jointly set up this pioneer post, which was funded for the first three years by a grant from the Anglican Church. This grant runs out at the end of May 2007. Canary Wharf Group Plc has been extremely supportive of this venture and generously provided office space and support (including IT support).
The task facing the Bishop’s chaplain in Docklands is on a large scale given the size of the community 90,000 (Dec 2006) currently working in Canary Wharf and its intended growth in the next 10 years to about 200,000 people.
To do all that chaplaincy has begun and wishes to continue, it needs to secure funding to support its continued existence after May 2007. It needs £50,000 per annum for stipend, pension (set in accordance with Church of England rates), national insurance and council tax and general expenses and running costs. In addition to this funding, the Bishop of London and the Diocese have agreed to continue to bear the cost of housing the Chaplain for a further three years and Canary Wharf Group Plc have committed themselves to provide office space and IT support for a further three years.
We are seeking donors who will commit to give annually and in a tax efficient way to fund chaplaincy through its next development phase from 2007-2010.
We hope that whether you are a Christian, a member of another faith or a friend, you will be interested in supporting our work. Please support us.
